Spotting or light brown vaginal bleeding can occur in both viable and nonviable pregnancies. It is obviously very easy to panic and fear the worst especially in the first trimester when you are just about sharing the news with your near and dear and are very excited about the future, but try to stay calm. Miscarriage is only one of the many causes of spotting. 

Anjali - My patient called me this morning. I could gather from her tone that she was very anxious. She said “ Doctor, I am very scared, I have noticed some spotting since this morning”

Chitra was in the 4th month of her pregnancy. Everything seemed to be going normal with her pregnancy until now. Today morning she noticed bright red bleeding. She was panicking. She called her mom and her husband and took an appointment with her doctor. She rushed to her Doctor the first thing. Her doctor was also a little concerned.

ಪ್ರಿಯಾ ಅವರ 29 ನೇ ವಾರದಲ್ಲಿ. ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಈಗಲೂ ಸಾಧಾರಣವಾಗಿ ಇರುವಂತೆ ತೋರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಆದರೆ ಇಂದು ಬೆಳಿಗ್ಗೆ ಅವಳಲ್ಲಿ ರಕ್ತಸ್ರಾವ ಮತ್ತು ಕಿಬ್ಬೊಟ್ಟೆಯ ನೋವು ಹಠಾತ್ ಆಕ್ರಮಣ ಆರಂಭವಾಯಿತು. ನೋವು ಅಷ್ಟೊಂದು ವಿಪರೀತವಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ ಆದರೆ ಖಂಡಿತವಾಗಿಯೂ ಅನಾನುಕೂಲವಾಗಿದೆ. ರಕ್ತಸ್ರಾವವು ಸೌಮ್ಯವಾಗಿತ್ತು, ಆದರೆ ಗಾಢವಾದ ಕೆಂಪು ಬಣ್ಣವನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿತ್ತು. ಪ್ರಿಯಾ ತುಂಬಾ ಆತಂಕಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದಳು ಮತ್ತು ಮಗುವಿನ ಕೆಲವೇ ಚಲನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು. ಅವಳ ಪತಿ ತನ್ನನ್ನು ವೈದ್ಯರ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಕರೆತಂದರು. ವೈದ್ಯರು ಅವಳನ್ನು ಪರೀಕ್ಷಿಸಿ ಅಲ್ಟ್ರಾಸೌಂಡ್ಗೆ ಆದೇಶಿಸಿದರು. ಅಲ್ಟ್ರಾಸೌಂಡ್ ನಿಂದ ಜರಾಯು ದೌರ್ಬಲ್ಯ (Abruptio placenta) ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿಯಬಂತು.

Placenta Previa means placenta first. In this condition placenta implants in the lower part of the uterus, close to or even covering the uterine opening called the internal os and leads to some bleeding usually after 20 weeks of gestation. Normally, the placenta is implanted in the upper uterus.

Priya is in her 8th month of pregnancy. She called me the other day and was worried as she saw some blood in her stools. I told her, not to worry. It could be hemorrhoids.

प्रिया अपने गर्भावस्ता के 29 वें सप्ताह में थीं। अब तक सब कुछ सामान्य रूप से चल रहा था। लेकिन आज सुबह से वह खून बह रहा है और अचानक नीचले पेट में दर्द होने की शुरुआत हुई है। दर्द हल्का था लेकिन निश्चित रूप से असुविधाजनक था। रक्तस्राव कम है लेकिन वह रंग में उज्ज्वल लाल है। वह बहुत चिंतित थी और बच्चे की बहुत ही कम गतिएं महसूस कर पाती थी। उसका पति उसे डॉक्टर के पास ले गए। डॉक्टर ने जांच कर अल्ट्रासाउंड का आदेश दिया। यह अल्ट्रासाउंड अब्रप्टिओ प्लेसेंटा (Abruptio Placenta) को रोकने के लिए है।

Priya was in her 29th  week. Everything seemed to be going normally until now. But since today morning she started having bleeding and sudden onset of low abdominal pain. The pain was mild but definitely uncomfortable. The bleeding was mild, but bright red in color. She was very anxious and was able to feel very few movements of the baby. Her husband rushed her to the Doctor. The doctor examined her and ordered an ultrasound. The ultrasound was to rule out Abruptio placenta.

So what is heavy menstrual bleeding?

Heavy menstrual bleeding is defined as soaking a pad almost every hour or less, having to get up at night to change a pad and bleeding for more than a week during each menstrual cycle.. Heavy menstrual bleeding is encountered by many women and in many cases, these women become anemic, due to such heavy loss of blood.

Vaginal bleeding during the first three months of pregnancy can usually signal miscarriage, although there are cases of bleeding during implantation of the placenta, which is usually, slight bleeding and it gets better on its own. So, it is always better to contact your doctor and let him or her have a look. Slight bleeding or spotting can be usually treated and pregnancy may continue.
