So what are these Braxton Hicks contractions?

 Braxton Hicks contractions are a tightening of the abdomen that comes and goes. They are contractions of the uterus in preparation for labor.

 The contractions tend to be felt more in the latter stages of pregnancy. They come and go irregularly, and usually last for about 30 seconds. While they can be uncomfortable, they usually aren’t painful. Braxton Hicks contractions tend to stop when you change position or activity.

 How are they different from labor pains?

Labour pains are more painful, tend to increase with time and the contractions get closer and longer lasting, and the pain does not go away with activity or walking.

 What can you do about Braxton Hicks contractions?

 You can probably ease the discomfort a little by lying down, taking a walk, or relaxing in a warm bath. In late pregnancy meaning after 37 weeks, you may experience Braxton Hicks contractions more often sometimes, as much as every 10 to 20 minutes. This is a sign that you could be in labor soon. After all, this if you are not sure that the contractions you are having are  Braxton hicks or if they are real labor contractions. Please call your doctor and they will be able to tell you if you are in labor by doing a vaginal examination and looking for signs of cervical dilatation.
