Sex during pregnancy - Is it safe?

Written by

Pregnant women constantly fear what is right and what is wrong during pregnancy? Will travelling cause problems during pregnancy? Will eating this food cause any problems to the baby? And one of the hundreds of concerns that pregnant women have is also to do with sex. Will having sex during pregnancy harm the baby?

During pregnancy, your blood volume increases by about 40 per cent. This not only swells your breasts and increases its size, but the increase in volume also increases the sensitivity throughout all erogenous zones. And that can mean more intense lovemaking.

In the first few months of pregnancy when symptoms like nausea, vomiting and fatigue are bothering you, sex may be the last thing on your mind. Sex drive usually fluctuates during pregnancy for the woman - Low during the first trimester, increasing and probably the maximum during the second trimester and decreasing again during the third trimester, especially close to the due date when the women are big, achy and even nervous about the approaching due date and parenthood.

Some women complain of cramps after sex or slight bleeding. Cramps after sex could be due to the uterine contractions which happen because of the prostaglandins in the Semen.

Nipple stimulation which can cause uterine contractions. This usually comes down in a few minutes, but if the cramps increase and do not stop please contact your doctor. The slight spotting after sex could also be due to rupture of the fragile blood capillaries in the vagina. The blood supply to the uterus and the vaginal area increases during pregnancy and this slight bleeding could be due to that, but if the bleeding is profuse menstrual-like bleeding and associated with cramps, please see your doctor immediately.

Sometimes the doctor may advise you against having sex especially if you have conditions like Placenta previa ( where the placenta is at the lower end of the uterus close to the cervical os) or if you have had a history of premature delivery, if the cervix is dilated, then you may pass on infections to your baby. No sex rule also applies when you are your partner has any kind of infections which could pass on to the baby through sexual intercourse.

So, if you have been asked by your doctor to be cautious, due to any of the above conditions that you may have, then please do keep away from having sex, otherwise, it is usually safe to have sex during pregnancy.
