4. Nutrition - Iron and folate

Written by

This month we want to talk about Spinach (Palak). These leafy greens are packed with folate.

Adequate folate is required in early pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects (birth defects of the brain and spinal cord).

Spinach is thought to be the storehouse of iron. There are about 3 grams of iron in 100 grams of spinach. Iron is a mineral that serves to form red blood cells (erythrocytes) are made in the bone marrow. Pregnant women need to stock up on their iron as the iron needs increase during pregnancy. Iron is needed for the production of RBC. Production of RBC is increased during pregnancy to accommodate the increased need for oxygen to be delivered to the growing baby. Spinach, as it contains iron, reduces the risk of anemia in the pregnant mother.

Spinach also contains vitamin A and folic acid, both of which are antioxidants that help fight harmful free radicals in the body. Spinach also contains Vitamin B3 and Vitamin K which is needed for healthy skin and for clotting of blood. In all Spinach is a powerhouse of many nutrients.

One piece of warning - Please make sure you wash all leafy vegetables very well under tap water before you cook them. They can contain dirt and chemicals. So be extra careful!
